Hyderabad: To control diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity, more than 80,000 people were scanned in the 14 states of India including Telangana state and Andhra Pradesh to ensure that the avoidable blindness can be controlled.

It is found that lapses in the care of diabetic patient and lack of awareness among people are leading to the blindness.

The government of India in the ministry of health and family welfare has formed National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment where both the diseases have been given a priority.

Apart from creating awareness, a standard protocol has been set to identify and treat these diseases so that they cannot be missed at the clinical level when the patients come for diabetes care.
