At the risk of sounding self-aggrandising, I’d say I’m a fairly empathetic person. Even when I wasn’t working in the disability domain, I was reasonably conscious of the different needs of people. Not like I changed anything around me or was overly vociferous on such subjects, but at least I was ‘aware’.

 

And that’s what I want to talk about. Awareness.

The National Association for the Blind is organising online programmes on digital accessibility training for visually impaired people. This is important given the potential growth of job opportunities companies need people who can test websites and other digital mediums to ensure they are accessible for people with disabilities.

SC affirms 3% quota for disabled in PSUs

It applies to direct recruitment and in promotions too, says top court

A three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court has granted relief to persons with disabilities across the country by allowing reservation in promotion in all groups for those employed in public sector jobs.

The Bench led by Justice Rohinton F. Nariman confirmed that 3% reservation should be given to disabled persons both in direct recruitment and in promotions.

Law does not insist on online application for disability certificate’

Directs government to issue instructions to authorities to act on application filed in physical form as per law.

The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday directed the State government to ensure that authorities are properly instructed to issue certificate of disability by processing the physical forms received and not to insist on submission of applications online as the online facility was merely an additional way to receive applications as per
the law.

All-terrain slip-proof crutches, electric wheelchair designed for Indian terrain, gaming tool for screening autism and a $1 speaking device were the innovations from 14 start-ups who were declared winners of ‘BIRAC-Social Alpha Quest for Assistive Technologies- Supported by Mphasis’, it was announced on Thursday.

In a unique Public-Private Partnership model, non-proft BIRAC, Tata Trusts-funded start-up incubator Social Alpha and IT services company Mphasis came together to scale and support assistive tech start-ups that are helping Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in India.
