Support Eyeway through Airtel Delhi Half Marathon 2011
Hi,
Encouraged by the fact that I managed to actually complete the 21 kms last year in the Delhi Half Marathon, I am planning to run again this year on the 27th of November. My target is to raise Rs.5 lakhs towards the Eyeway National Helpdesk for the blind. This is India's first such helpline for the blind.
The helpdesk was launched in 2006, when people from across the country started calling us with queries pertaining to their lives with blindness in response to our weekly radio programme "Eyeway Yeh Hai Roshni Ka Karawan". Today we receive an average of 35 to 40 calls every week, and these calls relate to education, careers, technology, legal provisions, concessions, parenting, discrimination and so on.
The dream is to reach out to people in the language they are most comfortable with. Language must not be a barrier to gain access to information on "life with blindness". On 1st January 2011, we launched Eyeway in Oriya in partnership with Open Learning System, Bhubaneshwar. We will be launching Eyeway in Bengali and Malayalam later this year. In the next 3 years, we are working towards being able to reach to the majority of blind people in the country in the language they understand. We are also trying to put together a single toll free number that blind people from across the country can call on.
We believe that it is an ill informed mindset that has marginalised the blind people of our communities. Blindness is not the problem, it is the thinking that is wrong. Eyeway is a single stop knowledge resource on life with blindness. The helpdesk works in sync with our weekly radio programme "Eyeway Yeh Hai Roshni Ka Karawan", our website www.eyeway.org, our SMS alert service, and the awareness/knowledge sharing workshops.
Eyeway needs support. I as a visually impaired person believe that an ill informed or corrupted mindset cannot stop people like me from finding our space in the World.
