Prasad eye institute, Hyderabad Fellowship in Vision Rehabilitation Services Fellowship in Comprehensive Ophthalmology LAP: Low-vision awareness programme Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery Pediatric Ophthalmology (Short-term) Short-term Fellowship Programme in Low Vision Care Training of Eye Bank Professionals Fellowship in Vision Rehabilitation Services The objective of this programme is to empower rehabilitation professionals with the skills necessary to effectively rehabilitate those who are blind or have impaired vision. A monthly stipend will be paid to the fellows. The fellows are entitled to leave as per the Institute rules. Accommodation on a twin-sharing basis will be provided. Food (vegetarian) is available in the hostel and Institute premises. Each fellow is expected to initiate and complete one prospective or retrospective study. Eligibility: Candidates with a master’s or bachelor’s degree or a diploma in special education or rehabilitation services, and who have been working for more than two years in the field of rehabilitation, are eligible for the fellowship. Selection: Preference will be given to candidates sponsored by eye care institutions or organisations supporting rehabilitation programmes. The fellows will be selected according to an interview, which is conducted during the last week of August every year. Selected candidates will be informed about their selection by the second week of September. Duration: One year Number of seats: Two fellows per year Contact details: L V Prasad Eye Institute Fellowship in Comprehensive Ophthalmology The programme is targeted towards ophthalmologists who have completed their basic training, or are practicing, and need to upgrade their skills in all specialties. The programme comprises technical instruction in modern methods of eye care, extensive work experience and complete patient care. It prepares candidates for a professional career in comprehensive ophthalmology with the ability to manage an eye care centre independently. The programme aims to train ophthalmologists in the diagnosis and management of common diseases of the eye in the areas of clinical evaluation, use of various investigative procedures, medical treatment, surgical intervention and research. The clinical training involves fellows working in rotation through different subspecialties in the outpatient department. Eligibility: MS or MD or DNB (Ophthalmology) or DO or DOMS Selection: Through a written test and interview in November and May Duration: Three years Session commences: January and July each year No. of seats: Four in each session Contact details: L V Prasad Eye Institute LAP: Low-vision awareness programme The course covers: An overview of low vision, clinical low vision assessment, low vision: functional implications of eye disease, paediatric low vision, low vision devices: optical and non-optical aids (theory and practical demonstration), clinical set-ups, rehabilitation services (counselling, orientation and mobility, community-based rehabilitation, daily living skills, support services, etc), and resource mobilisation and utilisation Eligibility: Ophthalmologists, optometrists or rehabilitation professionals - preferably institution based Duration: Three days; two programmes per year Number of Seats: 20 per workshop Contact details: L V Prasad Eye Institute Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery The course covers topics like: Introduction to microsurgery, Pre-operative evaluation and post-operative care, anesthesia. The candidate would do Supervised surgery, Practice difficult steps in the wet lab and finally would be taught to do Independent surgery and Pre-operative evaluation and post-operative care. Applications for the programs should be accompanied by a curriculum vitae as well as testimonials and letters from two reference persons. Eligibility: Practicing ophthalmologists Duration: Two months Number of seats: One every month Contact details: Education Centre Pediatric Ophthalmology (Short-term) The course focuses on pediatric cataract and glaucoma cases mainly. An insight into pediatric retinal cases with particular emphasis in the area of retinopathy of prematurity, as also orbital diseases and ocular tumours is also provided. Diagnosis of childhood eye diseases is a key element in the course. Management strategies, medical treatment and the use of diagnostic tools effectively are also a part of the training module. Applications must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, a copy of the applicant’s M.B.B.S. and P.G. diploma or certificate, as well as a letter from the sponsor. Eligibility: Practicing ophthalmic surgeons with experience Duration: Three months Session commences: in January, April, July and October every year Number of seats: One candidate in each session Contact details: Education Centre Short-term Fellowship Programme in Low Vision Care The course covers various aspects of low vision care like: an overview of low vision, vision classification system, visual perception, low vision environmental assessments, observational factors, identification of visual needs, binocularity, colour vision, determination of magnification, assessment of illumination, etc. The curriculum also includes training in low vision devices – their individual characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, clinical set-ups, resource mobilisation and utilisation. All aspects of rehabilitation such as counselling, orientation and mobility, daily living skills and support services are included in the course. Interaction with patients, their parents, and the community are also an integral part of the course. A monthly stipend is paid to the fellows. The fellows are entitled to leave as per the Institute rules. Accommodation on a twin-sharing basis is also provided. Eligibility: Candidates with a minimum qualification of diploma in optometry and a master’s degree or diplomate from the National Board of Examination in ophthalmology will be eligible. Duration: Three months; four programmes per year.
