Kutch Vikas Trust (KVT) is a Registered Charitable Trust

Kutch Vikas Trust is an organisation working
for the marginalised and disabled people of the remote areas of Kutch
district (since last 14 years), which is the largest district of the
country.
KVT is implementing various programmes rendering

The National Association for the Blind, Sabarkantha
district branch was established in 1985 with the aim of providing specialized
services for the welfare of the blind.

Educational Assistance: The Association
gives financial assistance to the blind college going students as well
as able bodied children of blind parents who do not have substantial income.
Free distribution of Educational Material:
Under this project the school going sighted children upto 4th std of blind
parents from lower income group are provided with educational material
e.g. school bags, note books, pencils, lunch boxes, water bags etc.
Medical Assistance: The Association
conducts Health camps from time to time and gives medicines to needy blind
patients.
Help the Aged Scheme: Homebound, infirm
and destitute blind senior citizens above the age of 55 are given monthly
assistance in kind
House Repair Scheme: Under this scheme
the Association helps needy blind persons residing in dilapidated Dwelling
Units.
Self Employment Project: The Association
provides things such as Agarbatties, personal weighing scales, long exercise
books, cutlery etc. to those enterprising blind persons who would like
to undertake a self employment venture to earn their livelihood.
Recreational Programmes: The Association
organises annual picnic for the members and their families. It also arranges
social gatherings, musical programmes, dramas etc. for the entertainment
of the sightless.
Equipment Bank for the Blind: BMA has
set up an E.B. for the blind where aids and appliances like folding canes,
braille writing devices, braille wrist watches, and many other things
which are of utmost use by the blind are provided at a 50% subsidized
cost. This is the only equipment bank of its kind in Maharashtra.
Counseling Services: The Association
has been conducting counseling service to the people who become blind
over a period of time. Counseling is given to home bound visually impaired
persons and their family members for the socio/ economic rehabilitation.

The Helen Keller Institute for Deaf and Deaf-Blind
Activities / services:
The Helen Keller Institute for Deaf and Deaf-Blind,
in Mumbai was established in 1977 as the first organisation in India to
develop education programmes for deaf-blind children. It focuses on the
desire to save deaf-blind children from misconceptions of being labelled
as "mentally retarded" and to get them their due attention in
society.

MGRC has developed into a cross disability organization
offering institution based services.
The Centre conducts surveys
in different Panchayats to identify the disabled persons. They are then
ounseled to get out of their shell of disappointment.
The Centre arranges for physical rehabilitation
according to the need of each individual i.e. medical treatment, corrective
surgery, physiotherapy and use of prosthesis and other aids.

Mitra Jyothi provides integrated development services
to the disabled, especially the visually disabled.
Audio Cassette (or) Talking Book Library:
At present they have more than 21,000 educational and general cassettes
with 787 members. More than 13 institutions are covered in this.
Braille Transcription Centre: This
Centre was initiated with the purpose of producing academic books in Braille.
The need for Braille books is that blind students have a difficulty in
remembering the spelling. So, in the primary level it is very important
to give them books in Braille to help them improve the vocabulary and
make a good foundation.
Independent living skills: Home Management
training for the women with visual impairment. Launched in June 1997,
this free residential course aims to impart, to women with visual impairment,
various skills required for independent living. The duration of this course
is for four months.
Mobility and Orientation:
Job Placement Service: A job placement
service in Karnataka has been able to place 327 candidates with disability,
successfully in different corporate sectors all over Karnataka. At present
1093 candidates are registered with them for job. They have designed a
form for registration of the candidates where all the details of candidates
are taken down like – personal details, disability details, experience,
educational qualification etc. Similarly a data bank of Employees with
450 prospective employers are in the list.
Basic Computer Training: A basic computer
programme has been started for visually Impaired.
Skills for the following activities are also
provided: Home Management, Personal Grooming, Craft, Stitching
and Knitting, Physical Fitness/ Self Defence, Legal Awareness, Women’s
health and hygiene.

Shree Ramana Maharishi Academy For The Blind (SRMAB)
Activities / services:
Shree Ramana Maharishi Academy For The Blind (SRMAB)
was founded in 1969. It offers both direct and indirect services through
its Urban, Rural and Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Centres.
The Academy offers courses to CBR professionals
from all over India and overseas at its training centre – Thirumurthy
Rural Development Centre (TRDC). The course includes extensive fieldwork
in the villages, working in real situations and putting theory training
quickly into practice to consolidate learning.
The Academy offers Rehabilitation Council of India
(RCI) recognised courses including: a diploma in visual impairment,
Bridge course for visual disability and B.Ed in special education. A
Bhoj University distance learning module is also available.
The Academy runs a residential school for the Blind
offering free education to visually impaired boys and girls aged 4 to
22 years.
Vocational training in Computer and Braille transcription,
dairy management and horticulture and has its own packaging unit.
The centre also provides 3-year training and non-formal
education in a residential setting and has special units for speech
and hearing impaired young people and those who are mentally challenged.
The training courses include: agriculture, horticulture, dairy farming,
poultry, sericulture and silk weaving, fish culture, beekeeping and
tailoring. Free admission is open to male persons with disabilities,
aged 14 to 40 years, in May every year.
The institution provides services to challenged people
especially visually impaired.
The institution runs an Integrated Vocational Training
scheme for visually, physical and hearing impaired people.
Coir products spinning, Khadi spinning, Tailoring,

It is engaged in the disability field providing comprehensive services
to nearly 2700 disabled children and adults.
Some of the main activities include:
Education through regular schools to blind, deaf,
orthopaedic and educable mentally retarded children.
Rural and urban pre-schools for deaf, preparation
of deaf children for mainstream.
Deaf children who cannot be integrated in regular
schools are given education through the special school run by the society.
Children with autism, learning disability and children
with special needs are supported through individual intervention plans.

National Institute For The Visually Handicapped, Chennai
Activities / services:
The Institute conducts various vocational training
courses, like - Braille Shorthand and Typewriting (Tamil), Computer
Operations primarily for employed blind persons and Executive Secretaryship
etc.
The institute organizes sale of aids and appliances.
Braille Printing is also done at the institute.
It also has an exciting project running, where in
college level books are recorded on audio tapes and is broadcasted over
Anna FM Radio (1 hour a day), 6.30 P.M. to 7.30 P.M. The show is broadcasted
in Tamil and English.
Research and Development is another important
activity.

This is a special school for the hearing and the visually
impaired students run by a world renowned educational and religious organization
called Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel. From the modest beginning in
the year 1962. St. Louis is one of the premier institutions of learning
and living for the hearing impaired and the visually challenged in India
today.
Activities / services:
St. Louis started a college for the deaf in
1993 in collaboration with the department of Social Welfare, Government
of Tamilnadu and University of Madras. The college is affiliated to
the University of Madras vide no. AI / V / 94-95: 1585 dt 21.09.1994.
The college offers a three year degree course in B.Com with both English
and Tamil. The lecturers are specially qualified to teach the hearing
impaired. It is the only college offering higher education for the hearing
impaired.

Offers diploma in Printing Technology and certificate
course in type writing. Minimum qualification required is Std. VIII
pass.

Vidya Vrikshah brings computer-based education
and skills, in all Indian languages, free of cost, to the visually impaired.
The software package has been designed and developed by the Indian Institute
of Technology (IIT), Chennai, and has the facility whereby keyboard
controls are provided to help visually impaired users to navigate the
screen for entering or editing text that is already entered. Normal
printouts for use by the sighted and Braille outputs for use by the
visually impaired are possible in any Indian language or in English
Braille. The keyboard input is echoed as speech, (letter-by-letter,
word-by-word, or line-by-line) or the entire text is read out in the
language used for entry.
Courses for instructors and volunteers (from
training or service institutions) are also organised, to enable them
to train the visually handicapped in the use of computers in Indian
languages.
The organization has developed a Braille Kit
to enable teaching of Braille and related skills by any literate person,
preferably mothers in home, teachers in mainstream schools. This would
enable blind children to be admitted freely into large numbers of nearby
mainstream schools. The Kit has 6 features, one is Natesan Braille Block,
which teaches how to form and read words in Braille etc. The Kit is
produced and offered at a price of Rs.300/- , by Worth Trust.

National Institute for the Visually Handicapped
National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, Dehradun
is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment,
Government of India.
This institute is an apex body which has been established
for human resource development, research and development, and designing
delivery of model rehabilitation services, extension and out reach services.
It is also engaged in production of braille / audio books and assistive
devices for the visually impaired .
Activities / services:
Home-bound services for visually impaired
children with additional disablities are also being extended.
Model school for the visually disabled - This is
one of the few co-educational secondary schools for visually impaired
children in the country. It provides education to both blind and low
vision children from pre-school to 12th standard. The school also provides
education to Visually Handicapped children with additional disabilities.
All children are provided free tuition, boarding, lodging, clothing,
medical care, pocket money, books and equipment.
The Central Braille Press produces text books, reference
books and material of general reading for the blind. The reading material
is supplied to the blind individuals and organisations.
The Institute's Training Centre for the Adult Blind
(Men and Women) imparts vocational training to the adult blind in the
age group of 18-40 years. All are provided free training, boarding,
lodging, clothing, medical care, pocket money, books and equipment.
Chair caning, handloom weaving, light engineering, braille stenography
(Hindi), typewriting (Hindi and English), computer operation, etc, are
some of the vocations in which training is imparted.
Manufacture of Braille Appliances workshop (MBA)
- This workshop was set up in 1953 for producing aids and appliances
for the use of blind. The Workshop manufactures a wide range of aids
and appliances for writing, computing, mobility and recreational purposes.
These aids and appliances are supplied to the visually impaired students/trainees
and to the organisations working for blind people.
National Library for Print Handicapped - Braille
Library contains more than 50,000 volumes of braille literature which
includes braille books, journals, periodicals. The library circulates
the books to members free of cost who visit the library. Facilities
are also available to out-station readers through free postal services.
Shikshit Yuva Seva Samiti is a registered charitable
trust working towards the rehabilitation of disabled persons and its activities
are spread in the whole district.
The organisation has been implementing Community-based
Rehabilitation and Integrated Education programs for the rural visually
impaired since 1994.
It has provided social, educational and economical
rehabilitation services to more than 1200 disabled persons till date.
