(The Visually Handicapped, Hyderabad)

Course content: The course covers introduction to computers, MS-DOS, basics and advanced concepts of Windows, MS-Office and the Internet. The students are also familiarised with a scanning program like Kurzweil. This training program is conducted at the Microsoft CIEFL Electronic Reading Center for the blind.

Centre for Blind Women (National Association for the Blind, New Delhi)

  • Computer courses for blind women

    1. Certificate course

    Course content: MS Word with screen reading software, scanning and reading books.

    Eligibility: Class Tenth passed.

    Duration: Two months

    2. Advanced Certificate course

    Course content: MS Word, MS Excel, Internet & E-mail, Scanning, Basic hardware & software, screen reading software basics.

    Eligibility: Class Twelfth (Higher Secondary) passed and basic knowledge of English language.

    Duration: Three months

    3. Diploma in Computer Applications

    Course content: MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, Internet & E-mail, Scanning, Basic hardware & software, screen reading software (functions & uses).

    Eligibility: Graduate, knowledge of English language.

    Duration: Six months

    Placement / Professional exposure: Professional exposure is provided through on-the-job training at the centre or outside in departments such as front office handling, data entry, coordination, inbound / outbound calling, followed by the placement.

    4. Certificate in Advanced Windows

    Course content: Scanning, Internet & E-mail, software installation,problem solving in Windows.

    Eligibility: Working girls

    Duration: 30 hours

  • Handicraft Training

    Course Content: Office stationery making, corporate gift making, wedding souvenirs, ethnic jewellery, exclusive festival specific products such as diyas for Diwali.

    Duration: Minimum six months

    Eligibility: Age above 16 years, with or without educational background.

    Professional exposure / Placement:

    • Stipend based training after passing the training course.
    • Trainees are given the opportunity to improve their marketing skills by having to organize stalls at different places.
  • Spoken English and Communication Skills

    Course Content: Basic grammar & composition, English writing, vocabulary building, spoken English.

    Duration: As per the specific requirements of the trainee.

    Eligibility: Age above 16 years, may or may not be educated.

    Other exposure: Communication skills and confidence building by professionals from the field of marketing and human resource.

Braille Literacy in Indian Languages
WEBEL Mediatronics Centre (Blind Relief Association, Delhi)

Course content: Braille literacy course through computers in 12 different Indian Languages. (The keyboard is connected into 6 keys combination and letters can be keyed in like in a normal Braille manner. Braille output as well as normal output can be easily taken out independently. Before taking the output the proof can be looked at the tactile reader wherein pins pop up as the way one’s writes it into.)

Eligibility: Visually Impaired Adults who are not so literate, depends on Braille Slate or Braille Writer – who can write by.

Technical Training Centre cum sub-contract workshop for the blind
(Blind Relief Association, Delhi)

The centre offers two types of courses to enable visually impaired to take up employment in industries.

a) General Mechanic cum Machine Operator

Course content: Training covers areas of factory work like assembly jobs, inspection works, Power Presses, Tapping machines etc.

This course is recognized by the Board of Technical Education, Government of Delhi. It also includes training in communication skills and other activities.

Eligibility: Visually Impaired Male, above 17 and below 30 years of age, VIII pass

Number of seats: 16

Duration: One year

Admissions are conducted in January and July every year. Last date for submitting applications is 15th November and 15th May for respective batches.

b) Light Engineering

Eligibility: Visually impaired male, above 18 and below 35 years of age, III pass

Electrical / Electronic Appliances Repairing
(Blind Relief Association, Delhi)

Course content: Repair and maintenance of household electrical and electronic equipments.

Eligibility: Male, Low vision and orthopaedically disabled persons above 18 and below 35 years of age, X class or 8th with 2 years working experience

Number of seats: 8

Duration: One year

Computer Training and Technology Centre
(National Association of the Blind, Delhi)

Course content: The course covers windows, word, excel, PPT, internet, e-mail, scanning and some utilities along with details on screen reading software.
Apart from this course NAB also provides individualized training which is targeted towards the persons who cannot attend full five month programme. It is more like distance education programme where trainees are initiated with some basic concepts and then are given tutorials for self-study. The fee structure is as under - Rupees 200 for registration; Rupees1,000 refundable security, residential /hostel facilities can be arranged by NAB.

Ritu and Ramesh Suri Centre for Relaxation and Therapeutic Massage (Blind Relief Association, Delhi)

Course content: Swedish massage,Thai massage, pressure point massage, aroma oil and head Massage.The objectives of this course are:

  • To impart scientific training to the visually impaired in massage
  • To collect and disseminate information regarding new adaptations in massage techniques enabling the blind to operate the same.
  • To collect literature and compile information about the maseur techniques specially designed for the visually impaired.
  • To impart operational training
  • To provide self-employment assistance to the visually impaired to work independently.

Eligibility: Both male and female visually impaired, Science as one of the subjects at Class VIII stage, Secondary School Examination (Class X) or equivalent with English as one of the subjects.

Number of seats: 10

Duration: Three months

The course is recognised by Vandana Luthra Curls and Curves (VLCC)

Other Information: The course is being run for the past six years. Along with computers; spoken and written English language is also integrated as part of their curriculum. This training helps the students to improve skills in communication, leadership and personality development.

The Rehabilitation Course
(National Association of the Blind, Mumbai)

Course content: The course assists the blind in accepting the condition, adjust to it, formulate new ways to contribute to society and lead independent lives. During the course the department provides free boarding and lodging and a nominal stipend for personal use.

The course is executed in three levels – Basic, Social and Vocational.

  • Basic: This part of the course aids to restore functions of daily life which may include - household chores like stitching, ironing, cooking and orientation and mobility (indoor and outdoor).
  • Social: This part of the course helps them to learn to interact, communicate, read Braille, time and the ability to manage basic transaction.
  • Vocational: This level imparts knowledge to manage small businesses and trade and develop mind co-ordination. The vocation encompasses training in chair caning, making agarbattis, liquid soap, candles, brooms and phenol.

Eligibility: Visually Impaired

Number of seats: In each batch 16 resident trainees and 14 days scholar trainees are admitted.

Duration: Four months, conducted thrice a year by the department of rehabilitation

Physiotherapy
(National Association of the Blind, Mumbai)

Course content: Recognised by the Maharashtra State Board of Vocational Examination the course provides contemporary and standardized education through registered doctors, established physiotherapists attached to hospitals and other professionals.

Recorded notes on tapes, books in large script and bone models that are built specially for used for imparting knowledge. Students are made proficient in all aspects in theory and clinical practice to ready them for professional practice in real life environment.

Subjects covered under the course include anatomy, physiotherapy (exercise therapy and electrotherapy), psychology (human and abnormal), physiology - I and II, English.

Clinical sessions are held at recognised hospitals and after the completion of the course they are enrolled for an intensive internship programme.

Eligibility: Visually Impaired, 10th and 12th grade and after securing 50% in the Entrance exam held for Science and English.

Number of seats: Eight per batch.

Duration: Two year certificate course

IDBI Polytechnic – Technical Training

The General Machine operator course

Eligibility: Visually impaired boys

Number of seats: Batch of 100 trainees

Duration: Two-year

This course is approved by the Board of Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra. The Department of Vocational Education and Training, Government of Maharashtra issues certificates after the completion of course that are worthy of acquiring employment for the trainees. The training is provided free to the students, alongwith lodging and food and a monthly allowance ranging Rupees 150-300 subject to passing periodical tests.

The NAB-Pheroze and Noshir Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind, Mount Abu (National Association of the Blind, Mumbai)

Eligibility: Visually Impaired between the ages of 10-40. Admission is granted after a mandatory interview with the individual concerned, in the following order of preference.

  • Blind individuals who have lost sight in an advanced age
  • Adult blind individuals who have had no privilege with any rehabilitation centre
  • Adult blind individuals who do not belong to the above two categories

Duration: Minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 18 months.

Course content: The rehabilitation programme imparts training for vocational and professional professions in addition to basic education. The centre provides customised programs on a need basis. Within this period every individual is given Rupees 40 to compensate for the absence of income.

The centre imparts education and training in the following areas: orientation and mobility, home economics and daily life, handicrafts, braille and skills of communication, light engineering, agriculture and allied pursuits, physical education and corrective therapy.

  • Candidates fulfilling required qualifications need to appear for a written test and interview, which will be held shortly.
  • Candidates securing the highest marks at the said test and interview will be selected for admission.
