On bookshare.org portal, Books are available in several accessible formats like Braille, Daisy (Audio format) and E-text.
Bookshare™ is an online library of digital books for people with print disabilities which allow copyrighted digital books to be made available to people with qualifying disabilities. In addition, many publishers and authors have volunteered to provide Bookshare with access to their works. By requiring individuals to register as Members and provide a Proof of Disability, Bookshare ensures that only qualified individuals use the service.
Bookshare Members download books, textbooks and newspapers in a compressed, encrypted file. They then read the material using adaptive technology, typically software that reads the book aloud (text-to-speech) and/or displays the text of the book on a computer screen, or Braille access devices, such as refreshable Braille displays.
To access the material which are available on bookshare, one need to be obtain the membership of Bookshare. This process required to make shore that the objective of bookshare is fulfill or not as these books are make available only for person with print disability.
Bookshare™ offers an expanding number of accessible books to people all over the world with qualifying print disabilities. Thousands of accessible books are available for download to international Members, based on copyright permissions granted by publishers and authors. Bookshare’s goal is to continue working with publishers and authors to increase the number of books available globally. Currently Bookshare has over 5,000 books available to Members in 30 countries.
Membership
To download copyrighted books, you need to sign up as Member. Bookshare offers two kinds of memberships:
Individual Membership
This type of membership allows individual to download any number of copyright books for there own use. To get this one need to obtain proof of disability. For India, bookshare has reduced the membership. The annual membership of individual is Rs. 400.
Organizational Membership
Organizations download books on behalf of their members and then send it to them. The organization appoints a central point of contact also known as primary contact. They will then register qualified members under the organization on whose behalf the organization will be downloading books. The individual account costs Rs.400 per member per year for an unlimited download. The organizational membership on the other hand purchases book blocks on behalf of their members. The price list is as follows. Since each book will be downloaded on behalf of a certain member and is watermarked and fingerprinted (digitally) for that member to safeguard the interest of the publisher you will need to download a separate book for each person.
A 30 book block costs Rs.1500 (cost per book Rs.50)
A 60 book block costs Rs.2250 (cost per book Rs. 37.50)
A 100 book block costs Rs.3000 (cost per book Rs.30)
