Shree Ramana Maharishi Academy For The Blind (SRMAB) was founded in 1969. It offers both direct and indirect services through its Urban, Rural and Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Centres. • The Academy offers courses to CBR professionals from all over India and overseas at its training centre – Thirumurthy Rural Development Centre (TRDC). The course includes extensive fieldwork in the villages, working in real situations and putting theory training quickly into practice to consolidate learning. • The Academy offers Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) recognised courses including: a diploma in visual impairment, Bridge course for visual disability and B.Ed in special education. A Bhoj University distance learning module is also available. • The Academy runs a residential school for the Blind offering free education to visually impaired boys and girls aged 4 to 22 years. • Vocational training in Computer and Braille transcription, dairy management and horticulture and has its own packaging unit. • The centre also provides 3-year training and non-formal education in a residential setting and has special units for speech and hearing impaired young people and those who are mentally challenged. The training courses include: agriculture, horticulture, dairy farming, poultry, sericulture and silk weaving, fish culture, beekeeping and tailoring. Free admission is open to male persons with disabilities, aged 14 to 40 years, in May every year. The institution provides services to challenged people especially visually impaired. The institution runs an Integrated Vocational Training scheme for visually, physical and hearing impaired people. Coir products spinning, Khadi spinning, Tailoring, Typewriting, Electrical winding, servicing of Home appliances, assembling of watch and clock are some of the vocations.
