Now, while the 11th Five-Year Plan is on the drawing board, is a good chance for planners to rethink employment opportunities for people with visual disability, careers that use cerebral and not merely tactile skills. It is time to empower visually disabled people so that they can make meaningful contributions in the white-collar job segment.
Radio is a medium where blind people can play a significant role, whether it be anchoring, presenting or producing. Even editing is not of bounds because specialised software helps work.
It is time for mass communication colleges in the country to devise inclusive courses, and to open their doors wider. Journalism or radio broadcasting could be careers of choice for students with visual disability. And could be routes to employment for many talented blind people.
Schools and learning centres need to develop communication and speaking skills of children with visual disability, so that they get a fighting chance to opt for radio as a career.
