Teaching teachers
Annie Koshi, Principal of St. Mary’s School, says, “If schools can have workshops to make teachers computer literate, why can’t we have workshops that teach them to deal with children who are not typical?”
The approach to teaching
in our schools also needs to be changed, and this will benefit all students.
Currently, schooling in India is entirely instruction-oriented; students are
instructed how to do things, by rote. We need a change to a more facilitation-oriented,
flexible model, where students can develop individualised skills and knowledge
gathering, and also to develop interpersonal skills and group dynamics. This
will lead to education of a higher quality for all, and give disabled children
confidence in using their own resources and resourcefulness.
