Blind students open people’s eyes to horrors of dowry
www.newkerala.com; August 2004
A group of blind students have come together to open people's eyes against dowry. The children relived the horrors of a dowry victim through a puppet play urging people to be more humane towards women.
The age-old tradition is strongly prevalent in the country, forcing many families to abort female foetuses or kill girls at birth.
"The main of aim our puppetry show is to remove anti-social practices like dowry. We are especially focussing on dowry; it affects the lower strata of society as they are unable to play the huge sums of money and their daughters are burnt to death," Suresh Kacchap, a student said. According to government statistics, about 5,000 cases of dowry deaths are reported every year.
"We want to create awareness among people. These blind children are working hard to create awareness,” said M.T.P Aggarwal, principal of the children’s school.
