Top 10 hazards faced
by visually impaired persons
We
asked visually impaired persons to list the most common problem situations faced
by them while moving around in the city. Here are the most common responses,
with proposed solutions:
- Open manholes: Improve walkways so one doesn’t need
to walk on roads.
- Sudden differences in levels: Add tactile markings before
changes in levels.
- Unmanned lifts in multi-storeyed buildings: Braille markings
on lift buttons and audio announcement.
- Reflective, highly polished floors: Use appropriate
materials to reduce glare.
- Inaccessible enquiry counters: Audio beepers to help locate
such booths.
- Crossing of roads: Audio signals at traffic lights.
- Boarding buses: RFID technology to announce bus numbers.
- Sudden change in light levels: Use of natural lighting
and appropriate colours to enhance light, visibility and contrast.
- Slush outside shops and other protrusions: Awareness-building.
