Tactiles
Delhi-based
Pelican Ceramics Industries Private Limited is the sole supplier of tactile
tiles, or tactiles as they are called, to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (D.M.R.C.).
To withstand the constant wear and tear caused by persons walking on the tiles,
they are three to four times higher abrasion resistant than cement. They have
a very high breaking strength of 3,000 Newtons (compared to 1,100 Newtons of
Australian tiles that were used by D.M.R.C. earlier).
The tiles are available in two varieties -- hazard warning (pictured on the left) and directional (pictured on the right)tiles. The directional tiles are meant to guide blind people along a path and have four elliptical raised platforms while the hazard tiles warn blind persons about danger and have raised circular platforms.
A unique feature of the tiles is that they have very low water absorption (approximately 0.1 per cent) which makes them withstand weather better and last longer.
The tiles cost Rupees 160 per square foot.
