At the Screen Awards, it’s Black that’s beautiful

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s saga of a deaf, mute and blind girl, Black, swept the coveted Final Four at The Hero Honda 12th Annual Star Screen Awards. Besides winning the Best Film award, Bhansali also went home with the Best Director trophy. Rani Mukerji was declared Best Actor (Female) and Amitabh Bachchan was Best Actor (Male). Both these leading stars of the film gave the credit of their success to the director.

Mr. Bhansali feels that it has been a well-deserved win. He acknowledged the whole-hearted efforts put in by his technicians and others who worked behind the scenes. "When the film gets a standing ovation at every screening all over the country you know that something right has happened," said the director.

He also regards ‘Black’ as his most fearless attempt. The film maker does not hide his disappointment that his film has not been chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars. He said: “It hurts, because this kind of an experience comes once in a while.”

He does not agree with the claims of the Film Federation of India, that Black’s main language is English which went against it. According to the director the only language in the film is sign language and that is universal.
