Dell accessible computers for visually impaired U.S. veterans

In a contract signed between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (V.A.) and Electronic Vision Access Solutions (E.V.A.S.), blind and visually impaired veterans throughout the United States will receive specially equipped Dell computers. E.V.A.S. is a small business, specialising in computer access for people with disabilities.<br><br>The V.A. estimates that approximately 1,000 veterans participating in their rehabilitation program for the blind will receive these customised “Dell OptiPlex” computers each year. They will provide a standard Dell configuration that V.A. hospitals around the country can order, helping ensure each veteran receives a consistent, quality product.<br><br>The systems will be fully integrated with application software, peripherals and assistive technology that make them accessible to people, who are blind. Dell flat-panel monitors, printers and scanners will also be included. The computers will be shipped with both large print and Braille guides for quick, easy set-up and use.<br><br>This one-year, “Computers and Software for the Blind” contract awarded to E.V.A.S. by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs came into effect at the end of July 2005 and includes four one-year options for renewal.
